East African Cuisine, full bar, peaceful, African Diaspora/World Citizen vibe.
WHY WE NEED YOU AT HIDMO'S:
You, the music lovers, make the gigs here. Our success is dependent on you coming and enjoying our music, and a drink, or one of their very expertly prepared East African style platters (share one with a table of friends!).

WEDNESDAYS: YOGI'S WORLD MUSIC 8:30 -10:30pm
Join Yogi and his music friends from all over the world. The lineup and groups will vary, but it will always be good. We're building a World Music Wednesday Night modeled after the successful Sunday night series (see below). We're just getting started; Oct 4th is our first one, featuring the Yoginis world jazz band.

This band features multi-lingual singer and KBCS DJ Samia Panni, who will grace us with some Brazilian bossas, and Latin Percussion heavy and also KBCS DJ Johnny Conga.

Yoginis Lineup:
Yogi on Keys, Compositions
Ed Mays - Drumset
Johnny Conga - Latin percussion
Tim Romain - Bass
Samia Panni - vocals (Portuguese and English)
Note: Our sax man Mike is missing this week, but we hope to have him as many weeks as possible, since he now lives in Olympia.

THURSDAYS: REGGAE WITH MYSTIK I AM. 8 - 10PM

ORIGINAL REGGAE led by vocalist/keyboardist Shemayin, featuring a rich tapestry of vocals and deep trancey grooves. Many of Seattle's well known Reggae and African musicians will be sitting in with her on Thursday nights.

FRIDAYS: African music alternating with Kalass, led by Guitarist/Singer Ganga Clamangou of Chad, and Atlantic Melody, led by Percussionist/Singer Edward Suarez of Guinea. I have seen both of these bands, and they are deserving of a lot more attention than they are getting.

SUNDAYS: AFRICAN MUSIC SERIES
Premier African Groups of Seattle, produced by Rob Pastorok. Rob's in China right now lining up things for his Global Heat band, so I don't have the Oct lineup of groups yet, but as soon as he gets back I'll have that info. Trust me on this, however, it's always good. African Music Sundays won a Best of Seattle Award in the Seattle Weekly this year.

Yogis Music 8-20-2006 Yoginis now on CD Baby!

Hi Everyone,

This is a special newsletter to announce our CD-EP is on the CD Baby website. Also a couple of gigs from some friends

Here's the hot links to our friends gigs:
Amusicator, announcing a new Saturday night Reggae/World series at Dante's restaurant and bar

Thomas Marriott's Willie Nelson Project (Willie like you've never heard him before!)

Irene Chigamba, mbira (African thumb piano) from Zimbabwe.

Yogi and the Yoginis

Our CD EP Songbird is on CDBaby!

Go to CDBaby.com and go to the world: samba page, or search the site using "Yoginis" in the Search field. $6.99 and it's yours! (Dang, I almost paid that much to make each one of those things!)

PLUS, we have a gig on

Sept 9th at Dante's in the U-District
5300 Roosevelt Way, Seattle WA 98105

Dante's is a nice "underground" club with nice decor, a room for the band and dancing with a good sound system, a big video screen for graphics behind the band, another room with pool tables and machines, fronted by a restaurant - good food, full bar and microbrews on tap.

The gig is arranged by Dawa, leader of the group Amusicator, who is running a Reggae/World night every Saturday night at Dante's.

Amusicator also has a special gig this Wednesday, the 23rd there:

Amusicator (Reggae and new influences)
August, 23 2006 at Dantes
5300 Roosevelt Way, Seattle WA., WA 98105

We're trying to bump it up in there so we can keep the place every Saturday, so come and bring a friend, and buy a drink, because the musicians will get some of the bar profits if they sell a respectable amount of drinks. (Oh my God!!! Did I just encourage people to drink while enjoying music??? Where's the mayor in all this? - Hey - don't get me started on THAT!)

Also this week, we have:

Thomas Marriott, Jazz Trumpeter Exraordinaire

Attention Music Fans!

On Monday, August 28th at 7:30 pm, the Seattle Drum School will be
hosting a
special
sneak preview of Thomas Marriott's new ensemble: The Willie Nelson
Project

This special sneak preview is being presented as part of the Geoff
Harper
Presents: Last Monday's
concert series at the Seattle Drum School, 12510 15th Ave NE (corner of

Yogis Music 7-20-06 Yogi w/ African Knights and much more

Hi Everyone,

The music newsletter is getting big because a lot of gigs are becoming listed on here. And there are some groups I didn't list that I will have to make sure are up next time. I'm a little bit busier myself these days, so I have had to cut back to twice a month with the newsletter instead of once a week. Which means I have to list gigs two to three weeks out. Because some of these musicians work several times a week, the resulting newsletter can get quite long. I hope the quicklinks at the top help.

Next propject will be to make a permanent list of links to the websites and myspace sites of all the bands I list so that you can visit them with ease at any time. The list will show up in the right hand column.

First, as usual is the gig I will be on this weekend. I will be playing keyboards with the African Knights, a band that always gets good feedback from our audiences. Roots Reggae al la Africa. If you haven't seen us yet, you should. It's another one of the unique projects I am involved in.

Danny Massure is a new name on the newsletter. Danny specializes in old-school DJ grooves and his shows mix it up with live old-school players. Danny is the kind of DJ that converts people who thought they don't like DJ's. He's a DJ that "gets it" about live music and live musicians. Yes, there are DJs who "get it". You won't see old schoolers like Mike Deasy and Thomas Marriott playing live with DJs very much. But with Danny they find it a joy. Go see why. I'll be there too, so come have a drink with me.

Anyway, here's this week's hot links followed by the full scoop:

Danny Massure's Ticklejunk All Stars w/Mike Deasy and special guest Thomas Marriott
Thomas Marriott Jazz Bands
Jovino Santos Neto - Brazilian pianist/composer extraordinaire
Eduardo Mendonca and Show Brazil

Yogi and the Yoginis

Another lineup of multi-talented musicians. We have Samia Panni with us, the versatile multi-language songstress and local expert on many types of world music (especially Brazilian). Listen to her at KBCS 91.3 fm on Saturdays 2-4pm. Also Johnny Conga, Latin percussion heavyweight, will be with us. Listen to his show on KBCS Saturdays at 6pm. Those of you who have come before know what to expect from us: well thought out selection of my originals and some choice Brazilian jazz covers, lots of high-level communication between the musicians during our improvisations, and a lineup of musicians who are all heavy hitters in their own right. Bring friends; we are trying to get the word out that we are starting to gig after many months of working on our CD and promotional materials.

Remember its kid friendly - some of my young students are coming. Especially bring your kids if they are music students, so they have a chance to be around a nice jazz gig with good people and get into the vibe. This way they learn many things about the music besides just studying notes.

Yogi and Friends Quartet plus much more

This is a big newsletter, folks. Also I will be sending you my Folklife picks tomorrow.

I am playing Saturday afternoon and Monday with African Balafon Maestro Naby Camara, and I'm fronting a quartet of my own music plus a few choice covers on
Saturday Night. Hotlink to my gigs

Here's the hotlinks to go directly to the other performers featured in this week's newsletter.

Samia Panni - Brazilian/Multi-Language vocals and percussion

Eduardo Mendonca/Show Brazil

Marc Smason - Trombonist/improviser and his groups

Thomas Marriott - Rising Jazz Trumpet Star and group

Jovino Santos Neto - Brazilian/Jazz pianist extraordinaire and groups

Beth and Jim Wulff - Versatile R&B/Jazz husband and wife team

YOGI's GIGs

Yogi and Friends Quartet

OK, I have lots of friends, so they can't all be fit into a coffee house gig, so I stripped it down to the jazz/brazilian/fusion quartet. Plenty of
original material, though. Everyone in this group is a kick-ass improviser, so the evening will feature lots of stunning improvs on my songs, and a few
carefully chosen covers.

Yogi - keys, compositions
Mike Deasy, Jr - saxes, horn arragements
Burt Boice - upright bass
Ed Mays - drums

Yogi with Naby Camara and Lagni Sussu

Northwest Folklife Festival, Seattle Center
Center House Stage Sat 27th at 2pm
and
Fountain Lawn Stage Mon 29th 3:40pm

Naby Camara is from Guinea, West Africa and holds two (that's right TWO) Canadian Juno Awards in the field of world music. We will be playing the authentic
music of his village in Guinea. I will have the only non-african instrument (piano), but I will be playing it in the African balafon-style (NOT like a
western piano). There's no other groups in Seattle doing this. If you haven't seen this, and you aren't from West Africa, then you haven't seen a similar
group. Because there aren't any. At least not in the USA. Get a hit of the real thing. You have two chances to see us for FREE at Folklife.

JOVINO SANTOS NETO

It's always inspiring to hear Jovino. When he's not in NYC, or Brazil... or Europe... or??

Bill Chism and Friends (jazz/blues on Sunday Afternoons in Ballard)

I just met Bill a few weeks ago. He's a very talented guitarist, and this Ballard Sunday gig is just heart warming. It's Ballard - it's the Neighborhood, it's the musicians, it's the atmosphere - and the food is very good, even though the menu is rather limited in choices. Who cares? Order some food - you'll like it! Drink specials 3 -6pm.

PLEASE NOTE THIS IS AN EARLY GIG STARTING AT 5PM.

The Bad Alberts gig is every Sunday, unless otherwise noted, from 5:00 -8:30. Along with Bill on guitar, the following singers and musicians are featured but others are welcome to sit in anytime. Bad Alberts also has a fantastic Happy Hour from 3:00 - 6:00.

Samia Panni promotes: Brazilian Music clinic/workshop and show by Claudia Vilella & Ricardo Peixoto

Here's a special event from local Brazilian music enthisiast, singer, and KBCS DJ Samia Panni:

Hello Friends,

The Brazilian guitar/vocal duo, Claudia Villela and Ricardo Peixoto, will be performing with Jovino Santos-Neto at the Jazz Alley on May 16th and 17th. All three of these tremendous musicians are well known faculty members of the California Brazil Camp and applauded performers of the Brazilian jazz genre.

Along with local guitarist, Michael Biller, I am helping to organize a couple of workshops, one would be a Brazilian guitar clinic with Ricardo Peixoto and the other, a Brazilian vocal workshop with Claudia Villela. The workshops are scheduled for May 14th. Time and place TBD very soon, pending flight reservations. These workshops are for all levels. You do not need to know how to speak Portuguese or have prior experience playing Brazilian music.

This truly is a rare opportunity to have workshops of this kind and caliber in this area.

Each workshop would last one hour and a half, and the last half hour we would bring both the guitar and vocal classes together for some "applied learning." Each workshop would cost $20 and will be taking place in a centralized location, easily accessible to anyone living in the Seattle/Bellevue area.
